On the Road: Marseille

Marseille has a very different vibe compared to Paris and Lyon. It's a bit more rough around the edges with some grit, which I like. Perfection is boring. I really enjoyed Le Panier. The Greeks first lived here in 600BC, which I think is around the last time the Leafs won a Cup. Tight, winding streets, lots of pinks, yellows, oranges. Quite picturesque. Though it was cool, the highlights of Marseille were... not Marseille. There is a little beach-town outside of the city called Cassis. Charming with a couple nice beaches. Street after pastel-coloured street of winding cobblestones. Tough to take a bad picture, but I did my best.

After Cassis, we took another daytrip to Les Calanques - limestone fjords along the Mediterranean Coast. We hiked amongst the cliffs for a few hours, heading down towards the water where a dip in the ocean was our reward. Fantastic. Been missing the Vancouver waters a little bit and the Mediterranean is a pretty not bad substitute.

On the Road: Lyon

Bit difficult to tear oneself away from Paris, but Europe awaits! Well, France awaits for now. First stop: Lyon! Very interesting city. Some Paris-like aspects, but on a smaller, less elaborate scale. For some strange reason, they even have their own Eiffel Tower. Okay.

The highlight is probably Vieux Lyon - one of Europe's most extensive renaissance neighbourhoods. Pretty cool. So cool, in fact, that they are creating a full-scale replica of it it in Dubai. No, seriously.

Here are a few photos from Lyon. Click them to make them bigger and to read the descriptions. Off to Marseille!

Musée Rodin

A must-see for any visitors to Paris, the Musée Rodin is fantastic and entry to the grounds is only 2€. I made some quick portraits while wandering amongst Rodin's iconic sculptures. Click the images to make them bigger. Enjoy!

August in Paris

August in Paris is a strange month. It is both the warmest and also the wettest month of the year. As such, the locals flee en-masse to the south of France, Portugal, Spain, etc. The residential areas are quite quiet and the touristy areas remain... touristy.

This leads to an interesting vibe in some areas, as many of the shops are closed for the entire month. The windows are either shuttered or painted over, so one can't even tell what wares are being sold in the other 11 months. Guitars, hair salon, boulangerie, shoe-repair, who knows!

However, I find the resulting painted-over windows somewhat intriguing up close. I've started photographing them and I like the results. Searching for interesting composition amongst the chaos. This leads to some confused looks from passersby, but I'm used to that!

First Month in Paris

Amazing city. I am staying in Pigalle, proudly referred to as "the seedy underbelly" of Paris. Just below Montmartre and the Sacré-Coeur. My camera, as usual, hasn't left my side since I've been here. See a few shots from the first month below:
